Reef Friendly Sunscreens
I recently discovered that certain ingredients in some of the most popular name brands of sunscreen are very harmful to Coral Reefs.
Coral Reefs are very important to the Ocean for many different reasons. It is our responsibility as humans to make sure that we don't contribute to killing them. In February of 2020, Forbes Magazine did an article. It said that scientists estimate about 70 to 90% of all coral reefs will disappear primarily as a result of warming ocean waters, ocean acidity, and pollution.

Many organizations are trying to protect and restore Coral Reef. In fact,
The Florida Aquarium in Tampa, Florida, has had success in reproducing Coral Reefs. However, let's do our part and be more conscious of what products we are using so we can help to maintain a healthy ocean.

Common Chemicals Listed On Sunscreens That Harm Coral Reef:
  • Oxybenzone
  • Benzophenone-1
  • Benzophenone-8
  • OD-PABA
  • 4-Methyl benzylidene camphor
  • 3-Benzylidence camphor
  • Nano-Titanium dioxide
  • Nano-Zinc oxide

The above chemicals are  listed in many sunscreen lotions and skincare products.  These ingredients are harmful not only for Coral Reefs but also for other Marine Life.

While doing research, I was happy to find reef-friendly sunscreens that are safe to use on kids with sensitive skin since Little Penny has eczema.

Below, I'm listing a variety of reef-friendly sunscreens that are safe to use to protect ourselves, our children, and Coral Reefs at various price points.

Summer is right around the corner, and this is the perfect time to choose reef-friendly sunscreens so that our children don't have to learn about Coral Reefs from history books.

I'm looking forward to our next chat!
